Global Outreach (GO) Cluster

MISSION

Our mission is to form a global community where sustainable technologies help people achieve the highest quality of life. We do this by identifying pervasive health care issues and aligning them with sustainable technological solutions through education, collaboration and negotiation.

About GO Cluster

The initial goal for our group is to assess the current models of collaborations between academic innovation and research centres and NFP organizations. Based on this initial assessment we hope to create a framework for maxSIMhealth to work with NFPs around the world to identify pervasive issues and support them with affordable and evidence based solutions in the realm of health care education and innovation.

I have previously worked with the local elderly population to promote wellbeing and improve their quality of life through volunteer work, and I'm thrilled to be able to implement simulation technologies into my work now to hopefully give back to them in the future and continue improving their daily life.

My thesis project will facilitate the achievement of my goal because it will connect subpopulations together to create a collaborative community that can design and produce healthcare devices or tools on demand. This streamlined supply and demand process will allow for more healthcare workers and citizens to receive proper care and equipment while simultaneously improving their health."

In the past, I have worked with various local organizations to assist in minimizing barriers to the social determinants of health with my involvement through Ontario Tech University as the President of Health Speaks and Vice President of Students Investing in Brain Research and development (SIBRD).

I believe the global health outreach project will help me to achieve my goal by allowing me to implement solutions to health disparities."

In the past I have worked with different non-profit organizations that address and help domestic abuse issues. My experience with NGOs has been pleasant and I believe in their power to promote change for the better.

The water filter project would allow me to utilize my collaboration skills and develop innovative ways to address water crises even in remote regions of the world. "

"The main goal of my work is to eliminate health care disparities using evidence-informed innovation and create local opportunities and growth through collaboration and knowledge put into practical use to enhance the systems and welfare of individuals in every community around the world.

Working with UN and BBC has provided me with hands-on experiences in program planning and implementing outreach services among diverse communities around the world to maintain healthy lives and develop sustainable communities.

In this project, I strive to ensure the well-being of individuals by modifying communities to promote sustainable living and maintain health equity arising from access to the innovative technology and social determinants of health."

In the past, I have worked with organizations such as AIESEC and Islamic Relief, both international non-profit organizations, working towards the UN’s 17 sustainable development goals and providing humanitarian aid to end poverty and disease worldwide.

I believe this project will enable me to achieve this vision because it will help provide feasible, sustainable solutions to communities around the world that are in need of access to healthcare resources through a non-profit method of delivery. "

In the past I have worked in diverse cultural and societal contexts from Sub-Saharan Africa to South America to Northern Indigenous regions of Canada, which provided me with first hand experiences.

I believe that this project will allow me to develop mechanisms to foster the growth and transition of innovation and technologies from where it can be built to where it needs to be utilized. "

"My goals as a doctor and researcher is to contribute my knowledge to help communities around the world achieve a better quality of life and health, in addition to helping health professionals have a higher quality education.

My experiences in South America have allowed me to provide medical care in super polarized social settings, from those of total misery to the richest and most technological environments.

This project is comprised of a multiprofessional and educational team of high standard and specialization. We will be able to offer precious opportunities for all those who need training along with improving their knowledge in caring for their local communities and use this to help more and more of those around them."

“As a doctor I believe that I am much more than a healer, I am also an agent of social transformation.

Working with neglected populations, more specifically with the Tiriyós, Kaxuyanas and Sikuyanas, Brazilian indigenous peoples, I concluded that humanized medicine, where attention to human beings brings dignity to life, is the basis for a revolution in the area of health.

Through health education research, we can extend this view of life and medical practice to health professionals in different parts of the world.

Having the opportunity to be part of a team of qualified professionals committed to the human being, gives me the strength to continue believing and fighting for an ever better world where the people around me will always be the target of compassion and respect.”

Project Timeline

Focus Projects

UMBILICAL CORD CLAMPS

Umbilical cord clamps are one of the most basic devices used during birth. However, they are not used globally because of costs, storage and access.

Using 3D printing to manufacture these clamps when needed, where needed, and at the fraction of the cost may provide part of the solution to make these life saving devices accessible globally.  In 2016, we have demonstrated that a fully functional clamp can be 3D printed in a remote region of Labrador, Canada, in a tent, with outside temperatures below -30C, using an inexpensive printer and gas power generator. Globally, 3D printing services are not available frequently enough to provide a solution. However, tapping into our collective human conscience and utilizing novel techniques such as crowdsourcing based manufacturing may prove to be the first step in flattening the  health care disparities around the World.

3DCROWDGO

The healthcare industry was heavily impacted by COVID-19 when shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as medical masks, shields, ventilators, and hazardous material suits started to arise. Although three-dimensional (3D) printing has been an especially popular effort for making PPE, assistive devices, and clinical equipment, the shortage still exists, and leading manufacturers increasing production has not managed to resolve the shortage. The most significant reinforcers of the PPE shortage include: a critical shortage of raw materials, strict quality control measures barring the sale of suboptimal units, and politically charged agendas preventing PPE distribution.

Our proposed solution to the shortage is the development of a crowdsourcing-based mobile application, 3DCROWDGO, that connects healthcare workers with local producers to help print PPE devices.
