This MaxSIMhealth cluster encompasses projects with a focus on technical skills.
The cluster’s work aims to build a community of practice, which connects multi-sector professionals working on research studies to develop and enhance non-technical and cultural skill, knowledge, and attitude. Simulation technology has been recently added to health care education. This cluster’s focus is to ensure that the human element and cultural competence are not forgotten and remain at the heart of all interactions to maintain a sense of humanity and person-centred approach in services, programs, and care provided. Our projects use innovative educational and technological strategies as a means to teach and train learners person-centred skills to improve consumers' experience and well-being.

"The overarching vision for my work is to contribute to flattening health care disparities in the world by promoting the growth and use of context sensitive technologies and techniques to improve the functioning of individuals and systems through education and innovation.
In the past I have worked in diverse cultural and societal contexts from Sub-Saharan Africa to South America to Northern Indigenous regions of Canada, which provided me with first hand experiences.
I believe that this project will allow me to develop mechanisms to foster the growth and transition of innovation and technologies from where it can be built to where it needs to be utilized. "

"My goals as a doctor and researcher is to contribute my knowledge to help communities around the world achieve a better quality of life and health, in addition to helping health professionals have a higher quality education.
My experiences in South America have allowed me to provide medical care in super polarized social settings, from those of total misery to the richest and most technological environments.
This project is comprised of a multiprofessional and educational team of high standard and specialization. We will be able to offer precious opportunities for all those who need training along with improving their knowledge in caring for their local communities and use this to help more and more of those around them."

“As a doctor I believe that I am much more than a healer, I am also an agent of social transformation.
Working with neglected populations, more specifically with the Tiriyós, Kaxuyanas and Sikuyanas, Brazilian indigenous peoples, I concluded that humanized medicine, where attention to human beings brings dignity to life, is the basis for a revolution in the area of health.
Through health education research, we can extend this view of life and medical practice to health professionals in different parts of the world.
Having the opportunity to be part of a team of qualified professionals committed to the human being, gives me the strength to continue believing and fighting for an ever better world where the people around me will always be the target of compassion and respect.”

Umbilical cord clamps are one of the most basic devices used during birth. However, they are not used globally because of costs, storage and access.
Using 3D printing to manufacture these clamps when needed, where needed, and at the fraction of the cost may provide part of the solution to make these life saving devices accessible globally. In 2016, we have demonstrated that a fully functional clamp can be 3D printed in a remote region of Labrador, Canada, in a tent, with outside temperatures below -30C, using an inexpensive printer and gas power generator. Globally, 3D printing services are not available frequently enough to provide a solution. However, tapping into our collective human conscience and utilizing novel techniques such as crowdsourcing based manufacturing may prove to be the first step in flattening the health care disparities around the World.
The healthcare industry was heavily impacted by COVID-19 when shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as medical masks, shields, ventilators, and hazardous material suits started to arise. Although three-dimensional (3D) printing has been an especially popular effort for making PPE, assistive devices, and clinical equipment, the shortage still exists, and leading manufacturers increasing production has not managed to resolve the shortage. The most significant reinforcers of the PPE shortage include: a critical shortage of raw materials, strict quality control measures barring the sale of suboptimal units, and politically charged agendas preventing PPE distribution.
Our proposed solution to the shortage is the development of a crowdsourcing-based mobile application, 3DCROWDGO, that connects healthcare workers with local producers to help print PPE devices.

Médico ao Extremo is a project focusing on the need to increase the visibility of health professionals that work in remote places in Brazil, caring and attending to neglected populations.
Médico au Extremo's mission is to arrange, empower, and manage health professionals, as well as their skills to ensure a humanized and resolutive treatment among the neglected and vulnerable populations that live in remote places.
Their goal is to become a reference on the management and empowerment of health professionals in order to support them to ensure a humanized treatment for the remote places’ population.
